The first large modern models of the "80 generation" were the F12 tractors for hauling semi-trailers, which replaced the F89s that had appeared in 1970, launched in the autumn of 1977. These models, with their completely new forward cab, benefited from the research that had led to the launch of the N models in 1973. This was particularly true of the chassis made of special high-strength steel, and of the elements of the drive train, which was also improved and reinforced. The standard use of aluminum fuel tanks and parabolic leaf springs resulted from the need to reduce the tractor's weight as much as possible in order to increase the payload. On board the F12, the driver's working conditions became excellent, which is essential for the considerable distances of international transport.
